Guns n Roses are 'out to' teach you English

Guns n Roses are 'out to' teach you English

By far one of Guns n Roses’ most famous songs was November Rain.  Let’s listen to this clip…

I know it’s hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn’t time be out to charm you?

Let’s read the lyrics together.

Here, the singer Axl Rose uses the phrase ‘out to’.  ‘Out to’ in English means ‘want to’ or ‘plan to’.  For example…

I’m out to make some money.
She’s out to find a husband.
Miles and his friends went to the pub.  They are out to have some fun.

In this song, the singer says ‘I know it’s hard to keep an open heart when even friends seem out to harm you’.  What he means is that sometimes friends may seem to be planning to hurt you, but you can not let this upset you.  He then says ‘if you could heal a broken heart wouldn’t time be out to charm you’.  Here, I have no idea what his meaning is.  But the phrase ‘time be out to charm you’ means that time is planning to make you happy.  (Kind of confusing…)

Out to’ is a bit different from ‘into’.  Of course ‘into’ can describe something ‘inside’ of something else, but ‘into’ can also describe something people are interested in.  For example…

Kathy uses her computer all the time.  She is really into playing games.
She’s really into her boss, but he doesn’t know she likes him that way.
Paul isn’t into cooking.  So his wife hired a private chef.

Now you try.  You have to use ‘out to’ or ‘into’ to fill in the following blanks.
